“If you have a motivation or the drive to learn a specific part of IT, you should also cover everything else,” he said. “That part of IT may be a small part of something bigger, so the more knowledge you can get about other sections of IT, the more that knowledge you can carry over to other areas.”
If you have already partnered with ECOM UK, chances are you’ve already met Jonathan Jeffries, our IT Technician.
Jonathan is our clients’ first port of call for any IT support issues, and responsible for managing the support tickets that come through to our board. Before we expanded our team further, Jonathan was also responsible for visiting sites and fixing servers and other hardware issues that cannot be handled remotely.
Like everyone in our support department, Jonathan has completed comprehensive training to give him the expertise he needs to deliver a stellar service to our clients. He achieved a 90-credit extended diploma in IT and finished a year-long IT Fundamentals apprenticeship.
“I applied for this job at ECOM because I wanted the opportunity to learn more about Microsoft 365 and cloud computing. These technologies have always interested me,” Jonathan said. “Also, I had worked in several helpdesk roles in the past and wanted to build on my existing skills with a more hands-on role.
“I started out by taking care of admin jobs in the office – for example, logging client details, managing processes, and managing patch updates. Before long, I was heading out to meet some of our local clients to learn more about their network layouts. Now, I manage every call that comes into ECOM, and try to deal with our clients’ IT challenges before they get passed on to a higher level if necessary.”
Jonathan hopes to progress to the second line role at ECOM in the near future. “I have no plans to leave the company, as I really enjoy it here. The work environment here is a fun one, and there’s never a dull moment in the office, whether that’s down to the banter or the work that needs doing!”
He has a great tip for anyone who is thinking of entering the IT industry:

Outside of work, Jonathan is an avid PC gamer. “I bought and built the parts for my home machine and put them all together and made it work,” he added. “Eventually, I would like to make my own game and website as part of my own personal project.”
